What to look for
- Capacity: buy for your family size (see the FAQ). An overfilled fridge cools poorly.
- Frost free vs direct cool: frost free for convenience, direct cool for the lowest price.
- Inverter compressor: quieter, more efficient and usually comes with a long compressor warranty, often 10 years.
- Star rating: a higher BEE star rating means lower bills over the fridge’s long life.
- Space: measure the spot and leave a few centimetres behind and at the sides for airflow.

What size fridge do I need?
As a guide: 1 to 2 people need about 180 to 250 litres, 3 to 4 people about 250 to 350 litres, and 5 or more about 350 litres or more. Choose bigger if you shop weekly or store a lot of drinks and leftovers.
Frost free or direct cool?
Frost free never needs manual defrosting and keeps cooling more evenly, so it is worth paying for if you can. Direct cool fridges are cheaper and use a little less power, but ice builds up and must be defrosted from time to time.
Do I need a stabiliser?
Most modern inverter fridges, including those here, work without one across a wide voltage range. If your area has very frequent power cuts or big voltage swings, a stabiliser is still cheap protection.
