AI assistants are only as useful as what they can reach. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that gives them a common way to connect to tools and data, so one integration works across many AI apps.

The USB-C idea

Before USB-C, every device needed its own cable. Before MCP, every AI app needed its own custom integration for each service. MCP works like a universal port: a service builds one MCP server, and any MCP-compatible AI app can use it.

How it works

MCP has three parts:

  • Host: the AI app you use, such as a chat assistant or a code editor.
  • Client: the part of the host that speaks MCP.
  • Server: a small program that exposes something useful: files, a database, a calendar, a design tool or a company’s internal API.

A server can offer tools (actions the AI can take, like “create issue”), resources (data it can read, like documents) and prompts (ready-made instructions). The AI decides when to use them, and good hosts ask for your permission first.

Why it matters

  • For users: your assistant can work with the apps you already use, from note-taking to project trackers.
  • For developers: build an integration once instead of separately for every AI platform.
  • For agentic AI: agents need reliable tools, and MCP is quickly becoming the standard way to provide them. (Что такое agentic AI?.)

Security tips

An MCP server can read data and take actions, so treat it like any app you install:

  • Use servers from trusted sources.
  • Grant the minimum permissions needed.
  • Keep approval prompts switched on for actions that change or send things.
  • Be aware that content an agent reads, such as a web page or email, can try to give it instructions.

Try it

Popular assistants such as Claude and AI code editors like Cursor support MCP. Developers can find official SDKs and example servers on the MCP website.

Частые вопросы

Who created MCP?

Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol as an open standard in November 2024. It has since been adopted by other major AI companies and many developer tools.

Do I need to code to use MCP?

Not necessarily. Many AI apps let you add ready-made MCP servers for popular services. Building your own server does need some programming.
