For the last few years, most people met AI as a chat box: you ask, it answers. ਏਜੰਟਿਕ AI is the next step. Instead of replying once, an AI agent is given a goal and works towards it on its own, deciding what to do next, using tools and checking its own progress.
How an AI agent works
Under the hood, most agents run a simple loop around a large language model:
- Plan: break the goal into steps (“find three suppliers, compare prices, draft an email”).
- Act: use a tool: search the web, run code, read a file, call an app’s API or click through a website.
- Observe: read what came back, including errors.
- Repeat: adjust the plan and continue until the job is done, or stop and ask you.
Two extra ingredients make agents useful in practice: memory, so they keep track of what they’ve done, and tools, which are what let them affect the real world rather than just describe it.
Standards that make agents work together
Agents need a common way to plug into tools and data. The most widely used is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard introduced by Anthropic in 2024 and since adopted across the industry, including by OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. With MCP, one “connector” for, say, your calendar or database can be used by many different AI apps. For agents talking to other agents, Google introduced the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol in 2025.
Where agents help today
- Coding: agents that read a codebase, make changes across many files and run the tests. See our guide to AI coding assistants and agents.
- Research: gathering sources, summarising and producing a cited report.
- Office work: sorting email, filling forms, updating spreadsheets and CRMs.
- Customer support: answering questions and taking simple actions such as refunds or bookings within set limits.
Where to be careful
Agents make mistakes, and because they act, mistakes can matter more than a wrong answer in a chat. Good habits:
- Give the least access needed: read-only where possible.
- Require confirmation before payments, sending messages or deleting anything.
- Watch for prompt injection: a web page or document can contain hidden instructions aimed at the agent.
- Review the output, at least until you trust a workflow.
How to try it
Many assistants you may already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, now include agent features like research modes, tool use and computer use. Start with a low-risk, repetitive task, and write a clear goal. Our free AI ਪ੍ਰੋਂਪਟ ਜਨਰੇਟਰ can help you structure it.

ਅਕਸਰ ਪੁੱਛੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਵਾਲ
the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent ਕੀ ਹੈ?
A chatbot answers one message at a time. An AI agent is given a goal, breaks it into steps, uses tools such as search, code or apps, checks the results and keeps going until the task is done or it needs your input.
Are AI agents safe to use?
They can be, with limits. Give an agent only the access it needs, ask it to confirm before anything irreversible such as payments or deleting files, and review its work, especially early on.
