AI tools improve every few months, but a handful of big shifts explain most of what’s new. Here they are, without the jargon.
1. Reasoning models that “think” first
Newer models can spend extra time working through a problem step by step before they answer. OpenAI’s o1 in 2024 and DeepSeek’s open-weight R1 in early 2025 made this approach mainstream, and most major assistants now offer a reasoning or “extended thinking” mode. Why it matters: much better results on maths, coding, planning and tricky analysis. Simple questions don’t need it, and it’s slower.
2. Multimodal by default
Leading models now understand text, images, audio and often video together. You can point your phone camera at a broken appliance and ask what’s wrong, or talk to an assistant in real time with natural voice. Why it matters: AI is moving from a text box into everyday situations.
3. Open-weight models catch up
Families such as Llama, Mistral, Qwen and DeepSeek publish model weights that anyone can download and run. The gap to the best closed models has narrowed a lot. Why it matters: companies can run AI privately on their own servers, and costs keep falling.
4. Smaller models, on your device
Compact models now run directly on phones and laptops, powering features like summaries, smart replies and translation without sending your data to the cloud. Some browsers even ship built-in on-device AI. Our free Vertaler uses it where available. Why it matters: faster, cheaper and more private.
5. Much longer memory (context)
Models can now read very long inputs: whole books, large codebases or hours of transcripts in one go. Why it matters: fewer “it forgot what I said earlier” moments, and better answers about large documents.
6. From answers to actions
The biggest shift is agentic AI: assistants that use tools and complete tasks, connected to your apps through standards like MCP. (Wat is agentic AI?.)
How to keep up
You don’t need to chase every release. Try a reasoning mode for hard problems, use voice or camera input for real-world questions, and check our AI tools directory voor tools that fit your work.
