We looked at cooling performance, energy rating, compressor type, condenser material and the brand’s service network across India, since a good installation and quick repairs matter as much as the AC itself.
What to look for
- Tonnage: match the AC to your room size (see the FAQ below). Too small and it never cools; too big and it wastes power.
- Star rating: BEE star ratings show efficiency. 5 star saves the most on bills if you use the AC daily.
- Inverter compressor: quieter, more even cooling and lower bills.
- Copper condenser: easier to repair and handles coastal air better than aluminium.
- Installation and service: check the installation charges and whether the brand has service centres in your town.
Tips to cut your AC bill
- Set it to 24°C. Each degree lower adds noticeably to power use.
- Use a ceiling fan on low with the AC to spread cool air faster.
- Clean the filters every two to three weeks in summer.

What size AC do I need?
As a rough guide, 1 ton suits rooms up to about 120 sq ft, 1.5 ton suits about 120 to 180 sq ft, and 2 ton suits about 180 to 250 sq ft. Go one size up for top-floor rooms, west-facing rooms or very hot cities.
Is a 5 star AC worth the extra cost?
If you run the AC for many hours a day over several months, yes: a 5 star inverter AC uses noticeably less electricity than a 3 star model, and the savings add up over a few summers. For a guest room used occasionally, a 3 star model is fine.
Inverter or non-inverter?
Inverter. It adjusts its speed instead of switching on and off, so it uses less power, cools more evenly and is quieter. Almost every good AC sold today is an inverter model.
