Matter and Thread Explained: The Smart Home Standard

Why Matter means smart devices finally work with Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung at once, what Thread adds, and what to check before you buy.

For years, buying smart home gear meant checking whether it worked with Alexa, Google or Apple Home, and hoping your devices could talk to each other. Matter was created to fix that.

Qu'est-ce que Matter ?

Matter is an open smart home standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, backed by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung and hundreds of other companies. Version 1.0 launched in 2022. A Matter device works with all major smart home platforms, and can even be used by several at once, so you can control the same light from an iPhone and a Google speaker.

Matter devices also work locally: commands go over your home network rather than through the cloud, which is faster and keeps working if the internet goes down.

Qu'est-ce que Thread ?

Thread is a low-power mesh network designed for smart home devices. Each mains-powered Thread device can relay signals for others, so coverage gets better as you add devices, and battery-powered sensors can last a long time. To connect Thread devices to your home network you need a Thread border router, which is built into many recent smart speakers, displays and streaming boxes.

Matter can run over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.

What kinds of devices support Matter?

Matter started with lights, plugs, switches, locks, thermostats, blinds and sensors. Later versions added appliances such as robot vacuums, fridges and washing machines, plus energy devices such as EV chargers and heat pumps, so check which version a device supports.

Buying checklist

  • Look for the Logo Matter on the box.
  • For battery sensors and locks, prefer Matter over Thread, and make sure you have a border router.
  • Check that the features you care about (for example energy monitoring) are exposed through Matter, not only the maker’s app.
  • Keep firmware up to date.

Automate it

Once your devices speak Matter, routines like “lights off and doors locked at midnight” work across brands. Power users can go further with open-source tools; see our free alternatives for automation, which include Node-RED.

Questions fréquentes

Do I need a hub for Matter?

Wi-Fi and Ethernet Matter devices work with a compatible controller such as a smart speaker or phone. Thread devices also need a Thread border router; many recent smart speakers, displays and TV boxes have one built in.

Will my old smart devices work with Matter?

Some older devices received Matter support through firmware updates, and some hubs can bridge older devices into Matter. Check the manufacturer's support page for your model.
