Beyond AI, a wave of scientific and engineering breakthroughs is moving from the lab towards everyday life. Here are eight to watch.
1. CRISPR gene-editing therapies
In 2023 regulators in the UK and US approved Casgevy, the first medicine based on CRISPR gene editing, for sickle cell disease and beta thalassaemia. It edits a patient’s own cells to fix the effects of an inherited disease, a model researchers hope to extend to many other conditions.
2. Fusion energy milestones
In December 2022 the US National Ignition Facility achieved ignition, getting more energy out of a fusion reaction than the laser energy put into the fuel, for the first time. Commercial fusion power is still years away, but public and private projects are racing to build working power plants.
3. Perovskite-silicon solar cells
Stacking a layer of perovskite on top of a silicon cell lets panels capture more of the sun’s spectrum. These tandem cells have set efficiency records above 33% in the lab, well beyond standard silicon panels, and manufacturers are working on durable versions.
4. Solid-state batteries
Replacing the liquid electrolyte in lithium batteries with a solid one promises more range, faster charging and better safety لعام electric cars and gadgets. Several carmakers and battery makers are testing them, with mass production targeted later this decade.
5. Quantum error correction
Quantum computers are fragile, and errors are their biggest obstacle. In 2024 Google’s Willow chip showed that adding more qubits to an error-correcting code can reduce errors, a key step towards useful, large-scale quantum computers.
6. Humanoid and general-purpose robots

7. GLP-1 medicines
Drugs in the GLP-1 class, first developed for diabetes, have transformed weight-loss treatment and are being studied for heart, kidney and other conditions, one of the biggest shifts in medicine in decades.
8. AI-designed proteins and materials
AI models that predict and design protein structures, recognised with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, are speeding up drug discovery and the search for new materials, enzymes and vaccines.
